Chinese heritage of Iloilo City and the Philippines. Anyone interested in this subject should rush to obtain a copy of Edgar Wickberg’s most enjoyable “The Chinese in Philippine Life 1850-1898″. This is the classic, a highly readable, well foot-noted standard work originally published by Yale University Press, which fortunately has been reprinted by the Ateneo de Manila Press . If you live in the Philippines they’ll ship it to you. You may also buy it from Amazon using this link Chinese in Philippine Life, 1850-1898 Chinese settlement in the Philippines almost always followed Spanish settlements. In the vicinity of their settlements, the Spanish provided the Chinese with commercial opportunities and some level of security of…

Manila Bookstores.  We live in the provinces where it’s practically impossible to buy books, unless you’re looking for a review book for a nursing board exam.  Iloilo is a city of nearly 400,000 souls, a good percentage of them going to the city’s numerous colleges, but we’ve never found a decent bookstore.  (But, there are some good college libraries in Iloilo.) The National Bookstore branches at SM City and Robinson’s mainly have…

This is a photo narrative of our trip to Boracay Island.  We traveled there from our home in Iloilo City by car.  First, a confession.  Although we have lived in Iloilo for three years, although we have explored many…

White Beach – Boracay, Philippines We’re back from our first visit to Boracay. While we’ll have a complete account of our trip there , we can’t help comparing Boracay to Cebu City/Mactan Island as destinations for the foreign tourist seeking a beach resort. To our mind, Boracay wins hands down. We are speaking from personal knowledge of both places. We lived in Cebu City for months and really like it. We’ve stayed at Maribago Bluewater Resort on Mactan. Mactan and Boracay have two things in common. The foreign tourist can fly in and go more or less directly to a beach resort without having to experience practically any of the inconveniences of travel in the “real” Philippines. This is unlike other places like Bantayan Island or Malpascua which involve the rigors of real travel in the Philippines, for better and for worse. Mactan Island Resort, Cebu, Philippines Here’s what we like better about Boracay: Even through Boracay is a major international beach resort destination with hordes of tourists, the people you come in contact with there, residents, workers alike, sunglass vendors and all the rest there are so pleasant, …

Citibank Savings Branch in Iloilo City, Philippines Citibank announced that it will close it’s Iloilo, Philippines branch as of February 4, 2009.  The branch was opened to great fanfare in 2006.  See http://www.thenewstoday.info/2006/11/17/citibank.savings.inc.launching.html Citibank Savings customers were invited to transfer their accounts to the Citibank Savings branch in Bacolod City which will remain open. This is another in a series of blows to international banking in Iloilo City and in Iloilo’s rivalry with Bacolod City.  In 1982 Iloilo lost its HSBC (Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation) branch which had …

I am a US citizen.  Here’s my experience voting in 2008 US elections by absentee ballot. I tried out the free FedEx shipping for absentee ballots this morning.  The FedEx program is called “Express your Vote”. I went to the FedEx office on the main floor of the Gaisano City mall in La Paz, Iloilo City,  across the river from the Atrium.  The office is at the end of the mall away from the river. There are also FedEx offices at the…

Philippine Driver’s License . Your foreign driver’s license is good for ninety days in the Philippines. After that you’ll need to get a Philippine license. Road trip: buying ultra-fresh Yellow Fin Tuna in San Joaquin, Iloilo I’ve been driving in Iloilo City since February, 2008 when we bought a new, very basic  Toyota Innova. Most days the Innova stays at home. We take jeepneys in the city, sometimes taxis. For eight pesos we can go most places we need to go and we don’t have to worry about accidents or parking.  Besides, it can be more fun.  When I’m sealed up in my air conditioned SUV, …
