In a follow up to an earlier post Living Local, I wanted to delve deeper into what you can do to “Live Local” and save tons of money on your next trip to the Philippines. Inevitably in your lead up to moving / retiring in the Philippines you will make several if not many trips […]

When we moved to the Philippines from the U.S. we shipped some of our household goods, including some antique table lamps.  We threw out the lamp shades thinking it would be easy to buy new ones in the Philippines. We ended up settling in Iloilo City.  We looked everywhere trying to buy new lamp shades in Iloilo.  It seems that table lamps are not used so much in the Philippines.  The only way we could buy a shade would be to buy a lamp and …

Digital photo narrative of our visit to Pandan, Antique Province, Philippines including information on natural and heritage sites, beaches, hiking, festivals, accommodations, hotels, resorts and dining. Our next stop is Pandan, Antique (222KM).  Pandan is one of those communities which has reached the realization that the protection and publicizing of its natural resources and maintaining its attractiveness is a good development strategy.  There’s a municipal tourism office in the middle of town.  We did not get to visit Malumpati Cold Spring Resort .  It appears to be a municipally-owned swimming hole mainly intended for day use, although there may be a cottage available.  You should be able …

THE American general manager of Shangri-La Hotel in Cebu is now in hot water after the Bureau of Immigration summoned him for showing disrespect to four congressmen whom he met four months ago. “The Ruins” Talisay, Bacolod This begins as an account of a May 2008 visit to Bacolod and environs but we hope to expand this section as we spend more time in Negros. We have been living in Iloilo City for nearly two years. Our Iloilo stay was supposed to only be for a month and then we were to go on to Bacolod City. We liked Iloilo so well we just stayed, but after this visit to Bacolod we can see that it’s an excellent choice for those seeking a mid-size Philippine city. Iloilo City’s expansion sprang from the core of an old Spanish settlement. Bacolod is newer and has a more modern plan with some wide roads and a more spacious layout. It also seems more prosperous than Iloilo City, its civic buildings and museums better maintained. It has also planted and maintained trees which grace its streets. I don’t know if Bacolod can match Iloilo’s medical care or educational facilities, but it’s certainly…

The Atrium Shopping Center, Iloilo City, Philippines The centrally-located  “Atrium” Shopping Center on General Luna Street,  contains a parking garage, the Day’s Hotel, a large branch of the Iloilo Supermarket and several restaurants (including a two-story McDonald’s) and shops. The “Home Store” is one of the best places to buy fancy kitchen and household appliances, equipment and accessories.  The Iloilo Supermarket at the Atrium has the best selection of imported food in Iloilo City.  They also stock salad greens and herbs.  The seafood is also good but more expensive than at the public markets.  We’re …

This gives our recommendations for hotels and pension houses in Iloilo City especially good budget places to stay in Iloilo. There are countless choices when it comes to places to stay in Iloilo City.  We’ll just mention a few possibilities we are familiar with and like.  Just be warned that these are all mid-range to budget-minded Iloilo hotel choices. Those accustomed to the Marriott or Hilton will not appreciate these places, or maybe any hotel in Iloilo. If you want deluxe, the Sarabia Manor, Hotel del Rio or Day’s Hotel may be your best choices. Pensione del Carmen, Gen. Luna St. Iloilo City Pensione del Carmen, Gen. Luna St. Iloilo City This is a very quiet family-…
