Locally grown organic rice is available in Tigbauan.  Stop by the Sol y Mar Resort to purchase. We paid P40 per kilo.  Our standard rice has been the excellent Dinorado which we have been buying in 10 kilo bags at Robinson’s Supermarket in Iloilo City but we like the fresh taste of the Zayco Natural Farm rice.

Digital photo narrative of our visit to Pandan, Antique Province, Philippines including information on natural and heritage sites, beaches, hiking, festivals, accommodations, hotels, resorts and dining. Our next stop is Pandan, Antique (222KM).  Pandan is one of those communities which has reached the realization that the protection and publicizing of its natural resources and maintaining its attractiveness is a good development strategy.  There’s a municipal tourism office in the middle of town.  We did not get to visit Malumpati Cold Spring Resort .  It appears to be a municipally-owned swimming hole mainly intended for day use, although there may be a cottage available.  You should be able …

White Beach – Boracay, Philippines We’re back from our first visit to Boracay. While we’ll have a complete account of our trip there , we can’t help comparing Boracay to Cebu City/Mactan Island as destinations for the foreign tourist seeking a beach resort. To our mind, Boracay wins hands down. We are speaking from personal knowledge of both places. We lived in Cebu City for months and really like it. We’ve stayed at Maribago Bluewater Resort on Mactan. Mactan and Boracay have two things in common. The foreign tourist can fly in and go more or less directly to a beach resort without having to experience practically any of the inconveniences of travel in the “real” Philippines. This is unlike other places like Bantayan Island or Malpascua which involve the rigors of real travel in the Philippines, for better and for worse. Mactan Island Resort, Cebu, Philippines Here’s what we like better about Boracay: Even through Boracay is a major international beach resort destination with hordes of tourists, the people you come in contact with there, residents, workers alike, sunglass vendors and all the rest there are so pleasant, …

If you’re looking for an quiet, nature-oriented island get-away on Panay Island, something totally the opposite of Boracay, it’s hard to beat the island resort of Marbuena in Iloilo Province in the Philippines.  The resort owns the entire island.  Logging and hunting are not allowed and, of course, there are no vehicles of any kind. A beautiful ocean-front hiking trail circles the island. We catch the pump boat to Marbuena at Mangorocoro, Ajuy, Iloilo Province The family we rent our Iloilo City apartment from often include us in their family outings. This time the trip was to the Marbuena Island resort near Ajuy, Iloilo, about a two hour drive north from Iloilo City. As you head north from Barotac Viejo, pass by Culasi port (Culasi, Iloilo…

Negros Oriental Provincial Capital, Dumaguete We spent two weeks in Dumaguete in February 2005.  Our visit was part of a plan to select the best place for upcoming retirement in the Philippines. Negros Oriental Provinical Capitol Building, Dumaguete Dumaguete is more genteel than any Philippine city I have visited. Most Philippine cities aim just to survive; being pretty is not high on the list. Instead of the usual polluted, industrial water front, Dumaguete has a long, lovely, waterfront promenade with cast iron street lamps and benches to rest on. Huge Acacia trees line the strip of parkland separating the promenade from Rizal Boulevard. The Boulevard has some nice hotels, cafes, and …

These are snapshots of other tropical houses, tropical house details and so forth to help us define the design of the retirement house we plan to build on our Tigbauan, Iloilo land.  They are an unorganized hodgepodge of things we’ve seen, things which caught our eye.  Maybe something here will be an inspiration to your Philippine building plans…

Iloilo beaches and beach resorts. If you’d like to spend time in Iloilo City but want to stay at a nearby beach resort, here are a couple of options.  Nes and Tat’s Beach Resort in Oton is closer to the City and has a pool, Sol y Mar Beach Resort in Tigbauan is quieter and has a better beach.  Don’t expect to find Boracay quality white sand beaches near Iloilo City.  The sand is brownish. Sol y Mar Beach Resort, Tigbauan, Iloilo Sol y Mar is a beach resort in Tigbauan, on the National Highway, about 20 KM west of Iloilo City. While we have not stayed there overnight, friends have, we have dined there, looked at the cottages and had a tour of the resort facilities.  We now live only a short walk away.  There is a restaurant offering basic dining options; grilled seafood, chicken and pork as well as sandwiches.  Especially recommended are the buko shakes and brewed coffee. Cottage at Sol y Mar For us, Sol y Mar is the best option for those who want stay overnight at a real beach…
