My nephew Doug Grant, a serious biker, is full of praise for the bicycle shops and mechanics of Iloilo City.  He says, “the best bikes shops in Iloilo are invisible to Google on not on Yellow Pages etc.  They are found only thru social contact riding with Filipinos. These are GREAT bike shops, very impressive and bike-tech savvy owners. They can build custom mtn bikes of high professional

We bought the glass for our windows from Iloilo Glass Service , 439 Iznart Street, phone 033-335-0768.  They gave truly superior service.  There were some minor problems, partly our fault.  Iloilo Glass made things right with no hesitation.  188 panes of 3/16″ glass cost us P16,640.  The Iloilo Glass quote was one-half the quote we received from another Iloilo glass shop. For the suspicious

Building our house in the Philippines. Buying our construction equipment in Iloilo.  Delivered, premixed concrete is rarely used in residential construction in the Philippine provinces.  In fact, many houses are built without even a cement mixer.  The concrete is mixed on the ground by workers with shovels. When we were considering a two story house, we were certain a gas powered mixer would be a good investment in the quality of the concrete and the safety of our house and ourselves.  This is…

The 3D brand of small appliances is one the most popular in the Philippines. We we first arrived we bought three 3D 18″ oscillating floor fans. We bought them because they seemed to be sturdy, having a metal motor frame. We paid around P1,300 for each of the fans. Now, three years later one of the fans needed repairs to the gearbox which runs the oscillation function. We were happy to find 3D has a website at http://3-d.com.ph/ which told us there was a 3D service center in Villa: Electrorac Service Center, phone 33-336-1057.  It’s located on the Iloilo-Oton National Highway in Arevalo near a veterinarian’s office.  We went there are were able to order the parts we needed.  We left a deposit.  The parts arrived from Manila in about ten days.  We were very happy with the service we received. The fans we bought http://3-d.com.ph/product/CHV-18 have given us good service.  They have run for almost continuously for three years.   They are sturdy with almost all metal construction…

Recommended Apple Macintosh computer repair center in the Philippines. My wife and I both have fairly aged Macintosh laptop computer.  Carol’s is a G3 iBook and mine a G4 PowerBook of about the same vintage.  Carol’s iMac display started to go out.  The display would only work if the laptop was almost closed.  We thought we were going to have to buy a new laptop but were not anxious to do so as…

Carol’s sister had ovarian cyst surgery at St. Luke’s Hospital in Manila in 2004. The total cost was about P70,000. If she had been a foreigner it would have cost more, but still affordable for most. One peculiarity of Philippine hospitals is that the better hospital room you have, the more you may be charged for all other medical services.  If you’re in a ward, the surgeon, the anesthesiologists and others will likely charge you less for their services than if you’re in a private room.  It’s a

Three of us visited SOS Children’s Village in Zarraga, Iloilo in December of 2008.  SOS Children’s Village Philippines is part of an international charity which provides long-term care to orphaned, abandoned and neglected Filipino children.  128 children reside at SOS Iloilo. There are six other SOS villages in the Philippines, caring for over 700 children in total.  The centers also provide outreach care and other services to families and communities near each SOS location. These “Family Strengthening Programs” help another 1,000 families in Iloilo and Guimaras Province. Bob has thirty years of experience in the U.S. working for government and non…
